Folkestone is 700 years old today. I didn't get this until it was too late:
Since the Charter of Incorporation in 1313 Folkestone has been able to elect their own mayor; to mark this historical occasion the Town Council is putting on a celebratory event and an evening of historical talks.
From 11am-3pm there will be a series of performances and music including historical theatre and a medieval band outside the Leas Cliff Hall. The Town Hall will also host a programme of talks detailed below.
Programme for Wednesday 17th July at Folkestone Town Hall (1-2 Guildahall Street) is as follows:
7 - 8 pm Dr Andrew Richardson - Canterbury Archaeological Trust 8 - 8.30 pm Eamonn Rooney - The homes of the Town Council through the years and some notable past Mayors 8.30 - 9pm 'Folkestone 1970 - 2000' - A Folkestone and District Local History Society Video
Please come along and enjoy our free cultural events!
This is my website The 'Gerald that I built in a fury of enthusiasm when we first came to Folkestone in approximately '04. I'd been a frequent visitor for a while before that but I am technically one of those Down From Londons you get nowadays. The site was a lot more dynamic with a calendar of events and voting for best venues and things, and I know it was a useful reference for those who were thinking of moving to the area. Now I've moved out of Folkestone again (though just a couple of miles) it doesn't get as much attention as it used to. Ironic really as The town is now becoming the exciting place we always thought it was just about to. My name is not Gerald by the way, this comes from a fake newspaper in an episode of Brasseye or something, the Portsmouth Gerald, and how there is a local paper here called the Folkestone Herald. Puns like this are great aren't they? Do get in touch if you have anything to offer, email anythign @ this domain, or try @folkestone or @pauly on the twitter.
