PLEASE DO COME TO THE GRAND HOTEL ON THE LEAS ON MONDAY MAY 19th AT 7PM.
Once again Folkestone's history is under threat as developers plan to demolish the Harbour Railway Station, the Station Master's House, the Signal Box and Viaduct in order to build a Marina and University. Save Folkestone Railway Group are seeking to retain all of this unique example of our engineering heritage.
For over 165 years, the railway and harbour has served many thousands of travellers both to and from the Continent, and millions of service personnel in two World Wars. It provided jobs for local people and could still do so. A fully working harbour and railway would definitely promote regeneration of the area.
COME ALONG TO THE GRAND, THE LEAS, FOLKESTONE on MAY 19th at 7PM and state your views. All Welcome. Don't miss the opportunity.
This is part of my website The 'Gerald that I built in a fury of excitement when we first moved to Folkestone sometime in 2004. I'd been a regular visitor for a few years before that so I am technically one of those Down From Londons you get nowadays. The site used to be updated more frequently with a gig calendar and voting for favourite venues and things, and I know it was a handy reference for others who were thinking of moving here. Now I've moved out of Folkestone again (though just to Hythe) it doesn't get as much attention as it used to. Ironic really as The town is becoming the exciting place we always thought it was just about to. My name is not Gerald by the way, this comes from a fake paper in an episode of Brasseye or something, the Portsmouth Gerald, and how there is a local paper here called the Folkestone Herald. Puns like this are great aren't they? Do get in touch if you have anything to offer, email anythign @ this domain, or try @folkestone or @pauly on the twitter.
